The digital transformation of Fashion has taken hold in this age of the corona virus. Companies that have embraced the digital turn are surviving this unique period, while others are struggling or have closed already. The insights we have gained in the Corona times show us that fashion can become distributed, localized or entirely digital. We see examples like PVH moving their 2000+ design team to their digital platform Stich, companies like Shima Seki introducing design platforms such as Fiz, and the emergence of entirely virtual fashion companies like the Fabricant.
A series of new workflows and pipelines emerge as systemic change is being embraced in fashion. This, questions fundamental tenets of fashion education. As the work of a fashion professional becomes digital a series of challenges and opportunities emerge. How does the presence of digital in fashion design changes manufacturing, marketing, branding, use, and analysis? What is the materiality of craftsmanship of digital materials? What is the relationship of the physical and digital, Is it a digital twin? What is fashion when it is only digital, only physical, or a combination of the two? Troy Nachtigall provides a few of his insights into research on “Materializing Data” while reflecting on what fashion could look like in the third millennia.
The study of fashion, from a research perspective is no longer a new subject for investigation and has expanded into a diverse and extensive field of inquiry, which explores the complex nature of fashion and dress in a broad and nuanced context.
The presentation explores a range of research methods and approaches pertinent to fashion, the role of the researcher as an outsider or insider when undertaking research and propositions for situating research accordingly
